Contrary to what most of us think, Diwali lasts a whole 5 days. Truth being, its significance is different all over the country.
A day before Diwali comes the festival of Dhanteras to welcome Goddess Lakshmi. Most of us invest in silver and gold or even buy a new cooking range for the kitchen, and light diyas in the evening.
Many of us wake up early in the morning so have an oil bath and an uptan. This ritual is related to the fact that Diwali always falls on the day of Amavasya. An early morning cleansing ritual is followed by Lakshmi & Ganesh puja, and bursting crackers in the day.
