55-Year Old Maria Is Empowering Herself With One Myntra Delivery At A Time

Like countless other women in India, Maria Tony gave up the private job she had started doing, once she had children. She and her husband subsequently started a kirana store in 2005 in Tirumalagiri village in Suryapet district, Telangana. However, making ends meet was still a task for her, and with both her sons now in college, she was quite keen to find opportunities to earn an extra income for their family.

Stepping Out Confidently

Enter Myntra Extended Network for Service Augmentation (MENSA). It was at a time like this that 55-year old Maria became a MENSA partner late last year. In the initial days, her sons had some qualms about her doing a second job, given her age. But as the quality of their lives improved thanks to the extra income, Maria’s boys shed their doubts as well. Today they are quite happy and supportive of their mother’s part-time venture as Myntra’s delivery partner.

Notwithstanding her family’s apprehensions, Maria herself was never besieged by self-doubt or nervousness. She was happy to come on board with Myntra’s MENSA program and enhance her income from the store. Part of her confidence also came from the fact that she had seen her neighbor and acquaintance, Saritha, doing this job for a long time. It was in fact Saritha who referred her to Myntra’s MENSA programme. After having been associated with MENSA for over a year now, Maria too has referred three of her friends to the programme.

While the MENSA team trained Maria to ensure a seamless delivery process, and on soft skills such as ways to interact with customers and gather feedback, she also accompanied Saritha for a couple of days to see how things work. There has been no looking back since then and Maria has been achieving 25-30 Myntra deliveries per day on an average.


Enhancing Her Family Income with MENSA Programme 

“The extra income makes a big difference in our lives and helps me take care of my college-going sons, one of whom is a basketball player,” says a proud Maria. The income from deliveries helps her son participate in different tournaments in different cities. “I also don’t feel like sitting idle at the shop anymore,” she adds happily!

The MENSA network is a set of curated kirana stores selected and trained by Myntra through a stringent screening process. The project started by reaching out to a few kirana stores to help with deliveries during their lean hours. However, the project started to scale, more and more stores and small businesses began to get involved in the initiative, thus, allowing Myntra to boost last mile connectivity. This not only helps Myntra provide customers with the best possible experience, but it also creates an additional source of income for store owners.


While women delivery partners are beginning to get engaged with Myntra, customers are still not used to seeing them frequently. They are nearly always pleasantly surprised to see a woman delivery agent. For Maria, doing the good work and getting appreciated is a reward in itself. Myntra wishes her the best and hopes she prospers manifold in her work!
