Carrying With Chutzpah

When a pregnant Kareena Kapoor Khan walked the ramp during the grand finale at the Lakme Fashion Week, she floored everyone with her poise and style. However, she is certainly not the first woman to carry herself with oomph while carrying a baby.

When Sonia Rykiel, the late French fashion designer, was carrying her second child, she could hardly find any maternity clothing to her liking. All the clothes seemed to scream shame and apology. So Rykiel designed her own outfit, and needless to say, it was not even remotely apologetic. ‘I wanted to show the world how happy I was. My mother-in-law was scandalised, but my friends asked how they could find one like it’, she said.

Maternity clothes

Indeed, a pregnancy brings along many changes in one’s life, but grunge dressing need not be one of them. Sure, as the pregnancy advances, one’s clothes shrink, but that’s no excuse to turn ourselves into shrinking wallflowers.

Thankfully, more and more women are enjoying this phase of life by expressing their inner happiness by doing what they do best – dressing even better. And why not, when there’s so much on offer for this special phase of life.

Well-known brands like Mine4Nine, MamaCouture, Oxolloxo, Preggear and Debenhams have all created a clothesline for the niche shopper who’s in the family way. Of course, each brand is refreshingly different from the other, giving one plenty of choice while shopping.

Myntra maternity clothes

Wittily named, Mine4Nine has on offer jumpsuits in a variety of shapes and sizes. They suit you whether you’re carrying high, low, spread out or spread thin. The range comprises printed flare dresses, georgette A-line dresses, printed A-line dresses and midi dresses. MamaCouture is about maxis, the most comfortable maternity wear one can imagine. These A-line maternity dresses come in solid satin and lace as well as polyester fit-n-flare dresses.

The Oxolloxo range has lengthy maternity maxi dresses, for those who like to cover their legs in elegant fashion, while Preggear has wraparound dresses – short, smart and comfortable.

Debenhams, the iconic London brand, has also brought its Red Herring maternity wear to India.

All these brands are available in Myntra’s online store. So one doesn’t have to look far to make the most of this special time of life!
